End of dual MARA regulation: Implications and opportunities

New opportunity for lawyers to develop migration law practices. From 19 November 2018, lawyers holding a practising certificate will no longer be required to "dual" register both as a migration agent with the Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA) and with the Law Society as a solicitor. They will instead choose between these two options. This long-in-the-making deregulation through amendments to the Migration Act 1958 (Cth) means that solicitors will no longer need to register as migration agents with MARA before they can provide “immigration assistance” to their clients. This will create new opportunities for lawyers to develop migration law practices and provide pro bono assistance to the community sector. Transition arrangements will apply to the group of lawyers with restricted practising certificates who operate migration practices as registered migration agents. Featuring presenters with extensive migration law experience who have been closely involved with the progress of this legislation over the past few years, this livecast will cover the key effects of the changes, and the opportunities expected to become available in the sometimes complex and controversial area of immigration law.
