Masterclass: Children’s law

Children’s law is a burgeoning field. Child protection laws to achieve safer care of children were introduced in Queensland through the Child Protection Reform Amendment Act 2017. Practitioners who work with families need to be able to advise their clients on these measures and respond to applications in this new legislative environment. In this Masterclass presented by experienced children law practitioners, delegates will review the key child protection measures introduced in Queensland over recent months. This includes a focus on permanency with the new permanency orders and requirement for the court to provide reasons why it is in the child’s best interest to make a further short term custody order after a child has had short term custody orders for more than two years. Delegates will receive practical guidance on what their clients will need advice upon and the instructions that will be required in responding to such applications. Discussion will also cover the implications of the recent amendments on case planning at family group meetings and the effect of the safe care and connection principles on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) children.
